Meeting Your Targeted Audience's Wants and Needs

Some of the most important aspects of website design, development and usability get left undone until it is realized that something is preventing user from purchasing the products or services represented. Every industry has a different niche audience (those seeking your services specifically) as well as a much larger one (those who are not seeking, but can use, your services). While you don't have to provide a perfect user experience for every individual who stumbles across your site (an impossible task anyway,) you always want to be sure to incorporate the elements that your audience wants and needs.

Display Contact Information

This was mentioned earlier but important enough to repeat. Be sure your contact information is easy to find, don't make your visitors hunt for it. Every page of your site should have a "contact us" link taking them to the page that provides all the information necessary to allow them to contact you with their preferred method of doing so.

Having a prominently displayed phone number on every page can increase phone traffic and resulting sales significantly. If you target a national or international audience, be sure to display a toll free number.

Create Fast Loading Pages

Even though broadband access is increasing, there is still a significant portion of those still connecting to the Internet via dial up. Keep this in consideration when you design your site. Be sure that every page downloads relatively quickly, with minimal lag time. Don't make your audience wait for you because they won't.

Using CSS and external scripts can significantly decrease download time of your pages. Use them! Limit your images and, whenever possible, compress them into smaller byte sizes.

Focus on a Single Theme

Don't try to do too much with a single website. Unless you have a nationally recognizable brand name, such as Wal-Mart, that sells both Barbie dolls and car batteries from the same store, you need to keep your websites focused on a single theme. Focusing your site(s) accordingly will help drive customers to the closing sale with minimal distractions, as well as enhancing keyword targeting for search engine placement. The less your website is about, the better you'll be able to focus the engines and the visitors to what you have.

Developing Multiple Sites

If you wish to sell products from different industries you're better off creating multiple sites to do the job. Few people will trust a clothing website to sell auto insurance! When going after different markets, it makes good business sense to create a new site for each industry you are targeting. When using this strategy, be sure to follow a couple of simple guidelines:

Target a Unique Audience: You want to be sure that each site is targeting a substantially unique audience or customer base. If you own a site selling house plans, don't go build five new sites with each one selling a different version of the same thing: garageplans.com, houseplans.com, customhomeplans.com, colonialhomeplans.com, etc.

This tactic is often used by those trying to dominate the top results of the search engines, edging out all their competitors. It is also considered a severe form of spam by the search engines. Each site that you set up must have a unique purpose with virtually no crossover with your other sites. Some examples of uniquely targeted sites are: houseplans.com, landscapingplans.com, homeofficeplans.com.

Somebody looking to convert a room into a home office is not necessarily going to be crossing over with someone looking to build an entire house. On the other hand, someone building a house might also be looking for landscaping plans, but that is essentially an entirely different area of design altogether. Each of these potential websites can be built to be substantially unique and target seekers of different needs.

Use Unique Content: Each site that you build needs to contain substantially different content. In our examples of acceptable unique sites above you want to make sure that you don't use similar content from one site to the next. You also should avoid using the same design template as well as the same business name and contact information on each site.

When I first started a blog for my business I had incorporated it into my main business website. About a year later I decided to roll it off into another completely new site hoping to garner some broader exposure. I could have easily kept the Pole Position brand for the blog but instead decided to create an entirely new name, look and feel for this new site.

On the other hand, I also created a small web directory where I kept the Pole Position branding, but chose a different name: PolePositionDirectory.com.

In each case, each of these sites serves an entirely different purpose with unique content. Even though someone can easily determine that all three sites are related to some degree, they are each unique entities going after different audiences looking for different things.

Reduce Shopping Cart Abandonment

If you sell products or utilize a shopping cart system in any way, you can easily increase conversion rates simply by improving your shopping cart system. The fewer clicks visitors have to go through to finish the buying process, the less likely they are to abandon their cart midstream and move on. Make the process simple, have them fill in only what is necessary to process the order and get them out the door.

Think of your shopping cart checkout process like the checkout line at any store. If the line is long many people, especially those making only small purchases, are more likely to set their products down and leave. Maybe they'll come back another day, or maybe they'll find the same item at another store with a smaller line. I don't know about you, but I've done that more than once. Shorten your checkout line and capture every sale possible, no matter how small.

Eliminate Those Annoying Ads

If you operate a commercial website don't clutter your pages with advertisements. Ads may be a great way to generate additional income but they also might be taking away more than they are generating. Everything on your site should be designed to draw the visitor toward the sale. Ads are designed to draw attention as well and therefore they often do no more than to draw the visitor away from one sale (yours) and off to another (a possible competitor!).

If you operate a non-commercial or information-only site, ads can be great, but use them sparingly and be sure stay away from useless banner exchange programs. If you're going to sell ad space, then determine what that space is worth and sell it accordingly.

Barbie and Ken: Santa and Mrs.Claus Suits Made Easy

Would you like to have Santa and Mrs. Claus suits for your Barbie and Ken dolls this year? How about a toy sack to go along with the ensemble? You can sew these outfits for your dolls in just a short time. The following are some suggestions to consider as you create your holiday doll costumes.

1. Use doll patterns that you already have. You don't have to go out and buy a special pattern made just for Santa and Mrs. Claus suits. With a few modifications, you can create your own unique designs. For Santa, you will need a long sleeve jacket, a pair of pants, a belt, and a hat. For Mrs. Claus, you will want a long dress.

2. Find fabrics you are comfortable with. Suitable materials include red polyester, fleece, or panne velvet. All of these choices sew up very nicely with a low shred factor. White fur or fleece works well for the trim. Black vinyl with a faux leather appearance makes a nice belt. Use a small square of yellow or gold vinyl for the belt buckle. The same red and white materials can be used for the Mrs. Claus costume, too.

3. Design a beard for Santa and attach it to the hat. I like to use white fleece for my trims and beard just because it's easier to control. Fur has a more realistic look, but can shred when you cut it. White fleece has a soft texture, and a warm, finished appearance. If you choose white fleece for Santa's beard, use a double layer and add a few vertical seam lines to create a realistic look. Then, sew it to the hat so that "it fits just right" when you slip the hat onto your Ken doll's head.

4. Sew up some black boots to complete Santa's suit. I used black polyester with white fleece trim because I like working with those fabrics. But, you can use other ones, such as polyester, panne velvet, fleece, felt, or velour. Secure two 3-inch strips of 1/4-inch elastic in each boot. Sew one along the ankle line, and the other along the top of the boot. These elastic strips will help to hold Santa's boots in place.

5. For the Mrs. Claus dress, add some white fleece to the sleeves and at the bottom of the dress hemline. Gold trim around the neckline and bottom edge will give her dress a fancy, holiday style. For her hat, start with a circle of red fabric, and add white lace trim around the outer edge. Then, add 4 1/2 inches of 1/4-inch elastic to keep the hat on her head. I sewed the elastic about 1/2 inch just inside the outer edge.

6. Remember to sew up a drawstring sack for Santa's toys. The sack could be made of a fabric with reindeer, bells, elves or a festive holiday scene. Follow basic steps to make a drawstring bag. For presentation purposes, fill the sack with stuffing or whatever you have around to give it a full appearance.

Keep in mind that these are just suggestions to help you as you design your own unique Santa and Mrs. Claus suits for your Barbie and Ken dolls. There are no right or wrong materials to use. Have fun creating your individual style!

The Latest Doll Trends - Barbie And Bratz

Many of us who played with Barbies as children would be shocked to know that Barbie has heavy competition. Bratz are a collection of dolls that are becoming increasingly popular with the same age of young girl who enjoy playing with Barbie dolls. Bratz were introduced in 2001, and Barbie has been feeling the heat ever since.

Created in 1961, Barbie went through a few changed in her long history, but lacking any serious competition in the fashion doll marketplace coasted comfortably despite controversies over her waist size and IQ level. But when four teenage girls with an urban attitude hit the market, the hip and fashionable Barbie doll was suddenly feeling rather "old school."

Taking a few years to collect herself, Barbie started to fight back. With help from Mattel, the company responsible for Barbie over the last five decades, Barbie changed her proportions, had a fashion overall, and snagged back the newly stylish Ken before any of the saucy upstarts could get hold of him.

While her waist might have thickened to "facilitate modern styles" or perhaps to placate critics after so many years, Barbie still has an uphill battle to reclaim her position as the sole heiress of the fashion industry. Much of the fight, unfortunately, is against her own reputation.

Barbie's Reputation

Despite an early career in 1961 as an astronaut, and her more modern forays into piloting commercial airlines, running major corporations and many medical careers, Barbie has earned herself the reputation of an airhead or ditz. Part of the problem stemmed from a talking teen Barbie that caused consternation among intellectual women with phrases such as, "I love to shop!" and "Math is hard!" but much of the animosity toward Barbie is more stereotypical slander. A woman, while plastic, is rich, powerful and beautiful, must be shunned by those who are jealous.

Regardless of her popularity with critics, Barbie is still a force to be reckoned with. Even with diehard fans and very dedicated young girls, the Bratz are certainly showing her a hard time. Even with her make-over a recent PR blitz, Barbie sales are starting to slump - mostly due to increased, and arguably worthy, competition. In 2004, Bratz seemed to be outselling Barbie, at least in the UK, with Mattel denying the charge.

Barbie Hits Back

By 2005, Barbie sales had slumped by 30% in the United States and 18% worldwide. While it might seem there could be other causes for the change, girls still love fashion, and if anything Barbie has even more to offer than before. This means that the four teenage dolls with big eyes and ultra trendy fashions are doing some serious damage. The Bratz are hitting Barbie where it hurts the most - in her pocketbook and in her sense of fashion.

But Barbie isn't going out of the top spot without a fight. Her pink toy store aisle might now be shared with other dolls, but Barbie's headed somewhere where she can meet and greet her devoted fans without interference. Barbie games are now online all over the internet, and fashion fans are finding one more way to play with Barbie. Will it be enough to keep her on top? It will be if Barbie has anything to say about it.

The Barbie Doll vs. The Bratz Dolls

There is no question, argument, or debate over the fact that the Mattel Barbie doll is the most popular doll of all-time. Barbie has been a favorite of little girls for nearly 50 years now and a constant top selling toy in retail stores everywhere. With that said, there seems to be another doll favorite in stores these days called the Bratz dolls.

The Bratz dolls have recently given Barbie some tough competition in the doll industry. Introduced in 2001, some of the many Bratz line of dolls include Bratz Babyz, Bratz Step Out, Bratz Rock Angelz, and many others as well. You can go inside any toy section of your favorite retailer and find a wide selection of these popular new dolls. Also included is a whole line of Lil Bratz which are designed for girls under 6 years of age.

Another factor in this doll rivalry is the fact that the Bratz dolls have fashions and accessories that include every ethnic group, whereas up until the last couple of years, Barbie had not. Could it have been the competition from Bratz that forced Barbie into this change? With Bratz closing the gap in sales, Barbie needed to come up with some fresh ideas. It should also be noted that Bratz dolls are also available in male models as well.

Over the past few holiday seasons we have seen the Princess Barbie and the Pauper Anneliesse become very popular and very good sellers. We are also seeing Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus. Included in the selection is Pegasus Annika, Cloud Queen Rayla, Prince Aidan, and Flying Horse Brietta.

The newest line of Barbie's is the Barbie Mini Kingdom. This line of Barbie,s is a miniature collection of dolls and accessories that are 6" in height.

Bratz has followed suit with a line called Bratz Forever Diamondz. At a price of $29.95 it is the most expensive Bratz dolls yet. The success this new collection is enjoying is very impressive. A new video game called Bratz Forever Diamondz is now on the market for Sony Playstation as well as Ninentendo. The company hopes this new video game will follow the success of the Rock Angelz game. Even more than this, there is talk of a full length animated motion picture in the works for release in 2007.

At no other time in Barbie's history has the competition been this fierce. Will Barbie survive? Only time will tell, but I wouldn't bet against her just yet. It would be hard to imagine life without Barbie. With nearly 50 years under her belt she has seen just about everything.

Does anybody see the similarities between this years Barbie range and last years Barbie range? Is it just a coincidence that Princess Anneliesse from last year is now Princess Annika, Pauper Erika is now Cloud Queen Rayla and King Dominic/Julian is now Prince Aidan. They also look pretty similar too!
This is not to say that the new range is not fantastic because it is but maybe this explains the sudden interest in something new for children such as the new Bratz dolls which are exciting and different and not scared of causing controversy.

Maybe our children need toys that reflect the times and do not send us back to our past. Barbie maybe correct in trying to try a few different styles in order to compete with Bratz but diversification may be in order.

Barbie Dolls - History and Facts

The Barbie doll phenomenon began in 1959 when Barbie was introduced at the New York Toy fair. Then began a great success story in the history of doll manufacturing. Barbie was the first adult doll figure to be mass produced. Before this nearly all dolls were modelled after babies or children. "New for '59,The Barbie Doll:A Shapely Teenage Fashion Model Price $3.00" was her intitial billing.

In 1945 Elliot and Ruth Handler formed a partnership with Harold Matson to manufacture picture frames. The two names Matson and Elliot were combined to form the company name Mattel. Elliot used the picture frame wood scrap to make doll house furniture. This was the start of the Handler furniture business.

About this time Ruth noticed that her daughter Barbara and friends preferred to play with adult paper dolls rather than child or baby dolls. The girls preferred a doll which could be their role model when they grew up. Ruth realised that there could be big commercial possibilities in the adult doll market. She discussed the idea with her husband but he felt that it would be too expensive to start making the dolls.

Soon after this Ruth made a trip to Germany and purchased a doll called Lilli. This adult type doll was based on a German comic strip. On returning to the USA she began work to redesign the doll working with a doll clothes designer. Soon the Barbie doll was born and was named after Ruth's daughter Barbara. The doll was patented by Mattel in 1958 and introduced in 1959. She was to become one of the most well known and well loved toys ever made.

Barbie soon became a collectors doll and was avidly sought after by adult collectors. Between 1959 and 1972 Barbie underwent seven changes in her appearance and design. These Barbies made up to 1972 are recognised as vintage collectible dolls by their fans and are eagerly sought after. The 1959 Barbie doll in mint condition will sell for thousands of dollars. Some have sold for as much as $8000 to $10,000 but you can buy them for much less and $2000 to $3000 is quite common. Later editions fetch proportionately less. Dolls made in the 1969 to 1972 period can often be bought for a few dollars. Garage sales and flea markets are still the source of a few early dolls. About 300,000 of the 1959 Barbie were made and there are undoubtedly many out there still undiscovered.

Parrot Talking - Choose a Bird For the Bird, Not the Talking

No matter how long you train birds, it is always interesting to hear those first garbled words that come from a young parrot talking. You can never know what to expect, or how much of the mimicking will be sounds that resemble real words.

Have you ever met someone socially who you have seen in pictures on many occasions before, and yet had never actually spoken with face to face? You may have an opinion at the time of how the person's voice might sound. When the first words come out, you are astonished at the tone or accent that you hear.

Birds are similar to humans because there is no way to know how they will reproduce what they hear. Yes, there are some indications of what you might expect based on similar birds of the same size and species. However, it is not assured that tonal quality will be the same even between two birds that hatched together from the same parents.

You may have heard that the African Grey is the smartest of all parrots and that they always talk. This isn't the case, because a parrot talking or not talking is a decision that the bird will sometimes make on his own.

The size of the parrot has some bearing on the sound quality because the large parrots normally have the richer more natural sounds. Even this is not always true because there are small birds that can emulate sounds comparable to the larger parrots.

Buying a parrot just to hear a parrot talking is not a wise or humane action. The parrot is a living thing that can become a great friend to you when it is given the proper training and attention. It is not a talking Barbie doll and it has feelings.

Invest in a trainer for your bird if you decide to get one. A professional knows how to handle the animal and stands a better chance of getting the parrot to talk than you do if you have no previous experience. If you use the help of a trainer, you still must stay involved with the bird to be sure it becomes attached to you and not the trainer.

Establishing and maintaining a proper atmosphere is necessary if you want your pet to be at ease around you and others in your family. If an animal is unhappy in its home, it will not be comfortable enough to develop parrot talking skills for you. Abused birds rarely learn to talk.

Birds are intelligent creatures given to connecting with only a few people. It is cruel to procure one only to give it away or sell it to someone else. Parrots mate for a lifetime in the wild, and they have the tendency to "marry" their owner when they are domesticated. Whether a bird talks or not, the owner should be committed to the relationship.

Barbie Chic Shoe Store Playset (2001) Review

This is a fun and inexpensive playset complete with shoe measurer, cash register, Barbie-size chair, shoe boxes and display cases. The great thing is that it comes with extra purses and shoes that Barbie really can use. One flaw is common in the Barbie playsets: there is a "drawer" in the display cabinet that is fake. How nice if it actually would open to provide a little more storage. As with shoes, a girl never can have too much storage! BTW, you can seat Tangerine Twist (great orange lace-tie heels) in the purple chair, and pose the Ken Movie Date doll (redressed with a shirt and tie) as the shoe salesman because he can actually hold the shoeboxes.

It's ok. - -
The quality of the shoes and handbags are not on par with those that come with a regular Barbie doll. The shoe display case is cute (and the chair that comes with the set is quite fasionable) but the center shelves are completely unusable -- they are at such a slant that any tiny movement will set the shoes tumbling down. We lay the case flat and put it in the drawer to store Barbie accessories - quite handy but definitely not as designed.

How Do You Determine The Worth of Your Vintage Dolls?

How do you know when a vintage doll is worth something? There are doll value books you start with; however, just looking up your particular vintage doll in the doll value book does not mean yours is worth what the book says. It could be worth more or less depending on several factors. There are many things that determine a vintage doll's worth.

Doll Collector Term Book Value: The value of your vintage doll is a price guide and not the value you can expect when you sell your doll either on the internet or to a dealer. Book Value is generally for a doll in excellent condition.

After looking at the worth in the doll value book, you next need to determine what the market demand is for your particular vintage doll. If there is no market demand for your vintage doll, you are unlikely to get the doll value book price. When there is low demand for your vintage doll, you will need to advertise for less than the price the doll value book says in order to make a sale. If there is high demand the vintage doll would sell high at an auction or a doll shop.

One of the most important ways to determine if your vintage doll is valuable is to find out just how rare the doll is. In general, the rarer the vintage doll, the higher price tag you can place on it and the more it is worth to you and others. If it is hard to find, a collector will generally want it, and will pay the higher price for it.

What is the condition of your vintage doll? Is your doll in "mint" condition, or excellent condition? You will need to determine exactly what condition your vintage doll is in.

Doll Collector Term Mint Condition: Flawless, no signs of wear or tear, no major flaws, just like it first rolled off the assembly line of production, etc. The doll must be spotlessly clean and not played with. The vintage doll that is in mint condition must have every single piece of clothing or accessory he or she originally came with. The clothing must have the like-new crispiness that is known as "sizing." Face paint must be bright; this is especially true for blush on the cheeks. The hair must have its original tightly-curled appearance. The vintage doll in mint condition must have the original box and/or hang tag.

Doll Collector Term Excellent Condition: Doll that is not mint, but has no major flaws. The dress is not perfect or not the original dress, there are minor flaws.

A vintage doll in mint condition that is rare will sell for a much higher price than a vintage doll well played-with. Even if you discover your vintage doll is not in the mint condition, he or she can still be valuable, just not as valuable. Always research current market value in print and online.

Fun With Barbie Doll Crafts

Many little girls love everything there is about Barbie. They like the fashion and beauty that goes along with these dolls. They also like to pretend to be adults. Their imaginations run wild. If your child likes Barbie dolls, then you can have fun crafts that they can do in order for them to have even more fun with this popular doll brand.

One of the best things you can have your child do is be creative and use their imagination. The main theme of Barbie is pink, so you can do crafts that use this pink theme. A great craft that your daughter can do is make her own Barbie doll. This doesn't require any plastic doll parts. All she needs is a piece of paper and some coloring utensils. Ask her to draw her favorite doll. She could even draw herself as a Barbie doll. The options are endless. This can add more fun without having to buy her a new doll. You can also have her draw separate clothing on a different piece of paper. If they are cut out, then they can be used to clothe her paper doll, adding even more fun to the experience.

If your child is interested in the clothing aspect of Barbie dolls, then you and she can work together to make clothing that resembles the type of thing that Barbie would wear. This also teaches your daughter how to sew and be creative with fabric and ribbon. This is an especially good craft if you, as a parent, already have the sewing machine and the skills to use it.

How To Save Money By Making Gifts This Holiday Season

Well, there are some steps to giving a great gift with very little out of pocket expense.

The very first step is to make a list! Sounds simple doesn't it? For some it really is. But if you are like me, you get the "rebound" list. What's THAT? So, you have your list- great! Here's the hard part. What to get everyone! Through trial and error, I have found MOST people do appreciate a gift that is handmade. Now do not panic if you aren't exactly crafty! I do not mean you must go crazy here. Just put yourself into the gift is all, while considering the recipient. I will list some ideas that are simple and won't break the bank!

Family Movie Night Basket - This one is so easy and everyone I have given it to loves it! Find a medium sized basket and fill it with these items (or similar)

Family themed movie

Old fashioned popcorn (bag costs under $1)

Popcorn Bowl (even better-use this as your basket! Buy at a Dollar Store)

Various Candy

This gift is great because you have shopped for an entire family! Instead of 3, 4, or 5 individual gifts at 10.00 each, for under 20.00 you have it covered!

2. On the same thought buy a Family Game Night package

An inexpensive Board Game

Snacks

Hot Cocoa

Mugs

3. For the Ladies

Spa Gift Set - include small toiletries in an exotic scent along with a bath pouf in a basket. Add a few votive candles with holder and it'll look fantastic!

Recipes in a Jar - Your favorite recipes dry ingredients layered in a large mason jar, along with a handwritten copy of instructions. Wrap it up in a cute kitchen towel for a great presentation!
Gratitude Journal - For just $1 you can purchase a blank journal. Add embellishments to suit the recipient. Fill in the first page as to why you are grateful for them!

A Trip Down Memory Lane - Several ways to do this:

1. Buy a photo album and create a simple scrapbook. Add extra items such as postcards, pictures, and other things you have shared with the recipient.

2. Buy a wooden frame at the craft store. Paint it and decorate it with a theme that corresponds to a picture of you with the recipient. Ex. glue shells on it for a beach photo.

3. A treasure chest! For about $5 you can purchase an unfinished wooden chest. Glue on photos and adhere them with Mod Podge. They can fill it with their favorite momentos.

4. For the Guys- Yes, guys like handmade too!

Fisherman, hunter, outdoorsman? Get a small plastic tackle box at any hardware store. Fill it up with emergency staples geared towards their passion! Ideas include a flashlight, power bars, compass, disposable camera(for the one's that get away!), and a certificate printed off the computer stating "World's Best Fisherman, etc".

Techie? - Decorate a T-Shirt with Computer slang (This Bytes for example). Or make a Password Journal for them to keep. Just decorate a blank journal with a computer theme. Make a Mouse Pad for them. You can purchase Blank Ones and decorate them yourself!

Handyman? - Again you could fill up that "Tool Chest". Fill it with candy or even handwritten notes. Find a great picture of him "in action" and frame it in an unfinished wooden frame that you have embellished with the phrase "Tool Time" and pictures of various tools etc....

5. The Kids (Little Ones)

Create a Board game - Decorate a blank piece of cardboard after a model of "Chutes and Ladders", "Candyland", etc. You create the theme! Do they love Pokemon, Yugioh, Barbie? Each space can relate to their interest. You will need a large piece of cardboard, paper relating to the theme (maybe from a book, magazine, or even off the computer), game pieces (gumball machine?), and "cards". For the cards you can use index cards. They will love it!

Bubble Bath Heaven - In a basket combine bubble bath, bath crayons, and small bath toys. My son loves those Grow a Towels and the Sponge Capsules. Again go with a theme! Have fun with this one!

Gift Certificate Books - Make your own coupon book. Include items such as - stay up 1/2 hour later, trip to the zoo, make cookies with mom or dad, family movie night. You name it! Cost? Nothing except the quality time you get later.

6. Tweens and Teens -

Here the coupon book could work again. Trip to mall, extra 1/2 curfew for one night, lunch date with mom or dad. You get the picture.

Give them a "their baby book" and include a letter with it. My mom did this and I loved it!

Books related to their hobby.

Make a decoration for their room. Lamps are easy ! Buy a fairly blank one and embellish the shade to match their room (Sports, Dragons, Pop culture, etc). Or a bulletin Board. Cover blank cork with fabric related to their interest. Wrap some coordinated ribbon and adhere with push pins for a French style memo-board. Click here for an idea of the finished product.

Now, of course, not everyone on your list will appreciate the handmade. You know who they are! Be prepared. Shop early, check out clearance shelves, buy off season. Have a drawer set aside for gifts. That way you'll always have some on hand.

I hope some of these ideas have helped. I will be writing another guide with more ideas soon!

Thank you!

50th Anniversary Barbie Glamour Doll Review

I purchased this item for a collector friend as a gift, shipping was pretty prompt, I left it in the shipping box and gave it as a gift, when it was opened we were disappointed by the condition, mostly it was the collector box it stands in, it was worn and scraped all over & ruined the effect. the doll looked ok but a little out of place. I wrote to the shipper but just got a snotty reply like I was the bad guy. We still have the doll as we were afraid to ship it back as the seller made it sound difficult with no promises so figured if we did it would be the last we saw of it or my money. In all my orders with Amazon,(allot) this is the first time I feel I got taken.

Frugal Kids' Birthday Party Gifts

Are your kids invited to numerous birthday parties
throughout the year? Buying a gift, paper to wrap
it in, ribbon and a bow, plus a card every time
can get expensive and tiresome, can't it!

Through the years I have discovered some easy ways
to save money and time and always be prepared for
those invitations.

My three children are older now, but when they were
young, it seemed as if one of them was invited to
a friend's birthday party almost every week! Usually
the invitations didn't arrive until 1 or 2 days before
the party. I got really fed up with running to the
store in our small town and trying to find an
appropriate gift on short notice.

I realized the first thing I needed to do was to get
organized. So I set aside a box in the hall closet and
started to fill it with gift items suitable
for children around my children's ages.

Each time I went to the discount or dollar store, I
looked at the clearance sales; especially after
Christmas. I tried to keep at least one gift for each
child on hand at all times.

I have always loved to make things so I was always
on the lookout for anything I could craft that kids
would like. One item I came across that the kids
really liked was gift jars. I would fill a pint or
quart jar (reused mayo or pizza sauce jars) with small
items. Some of the things I used were pens, erasers,
notepads, small cars, toy soldiers, hair ribbons, stickers,
candy, gum. Anything I found that would fit. I would
often buy in bulk and divide the items between several
jars.

Children love anything with their name on it, so I would
paint their name on the side of the jar or cross-stitch
it onto a cover for the lid, and I had a great gift!

This idea would also work using recycled boxes or tins.
Garage sales are a good place to pick up tins of all
sizes and colors. Just spray paint if needed. You don't
even have to decorate the top or sides, just wrap ribbon
or raffia around the tin and tie a bow on top.

Little girls always enjoy receiving more clothes for
their Barbie dolls. If you sew, you can make gifts
your daughter's friends will love from your scraps of
fabric and lace. And the clothes you make are much
better quality than the ones you pay premium prices
for in the store.

One last secret to giving great birthday gifts is:
remember that children love to open a package! Just
taking tissue out of a gift bag is not the same!

But wrapping a package doesn't have to break the bank
either. At garage sales, always look for anything
that can be used to wrap gifts--wallpaper, drawer
liner, even scraps of fabric. Look for yarn and pieces
of lace or other trim to use instead of ribbon. In other
words, just use your imagination!

Dollar stores are a great place to pick up inexpensive
wrapping paper in a pinch. The flat, folded kind is
cheaper than buying it on a roll, just cover the
creases with ribbon. Kids aren't going to take time
to notice, anyway!

Even an inexpensive gift will bring raves from the
birthday boy or girl when it's wrapped imaginatively.
Tie a lollipop on top or write their name in glitter.
Use your imagination and get creative!

Your children will love it when the gift they bring is
the hit of the party!

Playing The Dress Up Barbie Doll Game

If you're into Barbie dolls, then you might as well familiarize yourself everything about Barbie. A brief but intensive knowledge about Barbie, her history, and her makers will definitely help you in you pursuit of becoming a Barbie collector.

Barbie was designed and created by Ruth Handler based on a "Lilli doll" and was marketed as a "teenage fashion doll." The full name of "Barbie" is Barbara Millicent Roberts born of George and Margaret Roberts of Willows, Wisconsin.

She is said to attend Willows High School in Willows in Wisconsin and Manhattan International High School in New York City. She was introduced in March 9, 1959 by Mattel, Inc. at the American International Toy Fair and from then on, Barbie became the best-selling doll in the world.

Barbie holds a pilot's license and known to operate commercial airliners when she is off duty as a flight attendant. Because of her job, Barbie is known for having lots of friends that are of ethnically diverse and social circle that include the Hispanic Teresa, African-American Christie and Steven (Christie's beau), and Kayla. But among these, the most popular companion of Barbie is her long-time boyfriend, Ken Carson, who followed her debut in 1961.

Aside from her love for flying, Barbie also loves animals, thus, she has 38 recorded pets like cats, dogs, horses, panda, lion cub, and a zebra. Known for her modern and lavish lifestyle, Barbie owns convertibles, trailers, jeeps and other expensive vehicles under her belt.

BEYOND THE DOLL

Aside from the lovable collections of Barbie dolls that were created and launched over the years, fans of Barbie couldn't just get enough of her, thus, many of them created various stuff that are related to the doll. Some of these are merchandise, mementos, movies, and other souvenir items.

But among these, the most popular thing that was invented because of Barbie is the dress up Barbie doll game. This game has become popular to young girls and even to those girls who are young at heart.

Dress up Barbie doll game enables the player to dress up Barbie in trendy clothes with marching hairdos. This game also lets you dress up your choice of Barbie doll and lets you have an interactive experience with other players.

Aside from letting you dress up Barbie in any fashion you want, this dress up Barbie doll game also lets you change the color of the doll's hair, lip, and cheeks. If you want to change everything, you can easily reset the game by manipulating the buttons.

The dress up Barbie doll game can be downloaded with minimum requirements such as supported OS Windows 2000 or Windows XP. You can also share it by sending it via funny messengers.

Popular Characters Can Be Found on Coins, Including Barbie

Some of the major foreign mints produce coins for the country in which the mint is located, but also produce coins for smaller countries that have no mint. The smaller countries often use the coins are a source of income, so having them be collectible is extremely important. Images of subjects that are collectible on their own offer opportunities to have issues of coinage that are highly desired. It is, therefore, quite understandable that these countries utilize popular subjects for their collectible coins.

One of the most collectible dolls today is Barbie. The Barbie doll itself exists in a multitude of editions, some aimed directly at the collecting community. To celebrate Barbie's fiftieth anniversary, the prestigious Perth Mint produced a beautiful, colorized Barbie coin for the island nation of Tuvalu. This 2009 issue comes in proof condition, and is housed in a pink display case and a box. The coin is licensed by Mattel.

The Perth Mint also makes two coins that celebrate the Transformers movie. These coins are also legal tender for Tuvalu. The coins depict Megatron and Optimus Prime, and come housed in their individual display cases. These coins are also colorized. These coins are produced with agreements from Dreamworks and Hasbro.

The New Zealand Mint produced a four coin set in conjunction with the one hundred twentieth anniversary of the Sherlock Holmes. These sets, beautifully colorized, were released in 2007. They are proof-line. The box that accompanied each of these sets of coins was made in the image of a filmmaker's clapper-board. The coins are legal tender in the Cook Islands.

While the collecting community in the United States is probably the largest, some coins appeal primarily to residents of other nations. The New Zealand Mint produces the three proof Tintin coins for France. These coins bear the denomination of one and a half Euros. They commemorate a cartoon character, Tintin, whose cartoons were drawn by a Belgian artist, and were published in French.

The coins mentioned in this article are all quality pieces that appeal to multiple groups of collectors. They are made of fine silver, with the exception of the Tintin coins, which have a slightly lower purity. They are all limited edition pieces, and come with certificates of authenticity. The major mints must cap production low, and retain quality, or the incorporation of a subject that is itself collectible would be nullified.

Black Spaniel Gallery offers links through our http://blackspanielgallery.com website to these mints, and invite you to utilize these links to learn more about these wonderful coins directly from their sources.

Bob Mackie - Sultan of Sequins

Robert "Bob" Mackie is an American designer whose clothing is worn by many of today's top celebrities as well as some of Hollywood's biggest names of the past, including Madonna, Raquel Welch, Barbara Streisand, Joan Collins, Diahann Carroll, Lucille Ball, Judy Garland, Diana Ross, Oprah Winfrey, Tina Turner, Bette Midler, Sharon Stone, Ann-Margaret, Brooke Shields, and many more. Even Bart Simpson sported a Bob Mackie outfit in one episode of The Simpsons.

Bob Mackie got his start by creating the many memorable costumes on 'The Carol Burnett Show' as well as for actress and singer Cher. When working with 'The Carol Burnett Show', some of his designs had more of a humorous appeal than a fashion appeal. One famous dress, called the "curtain dress," incorporated a curtain rod that ran across the shoulders. Mackie enjoyed an eleven-year career with 'The Carol Burnett Show' as he designed a number of costumes and wigs. Together, he and Burnett created numerous "alter-egos" that Burnett portrayed on her show. In many cases, the costume helped define the character, which then helped to create the script, rather than the other way around. As such, he is one of few designers that has mixed his craft with theater.

Mackie also designed a show-stopping outfit for Cher that she wore to the 1986 Academy Awards, which incorporated a loincloth, a black chain link top, and a rather large headdress. Cher is commonly seen wearing Mackie's designs - so often, in fact, that most picture her in one of his outfits when thinking of the star. The outfits he has created for Cher and for other celebrities certainly do keep in line with one of Mackie's most famous quotes of "A woman who wears my clothes is not afraid to be noticed."

Known by many as the "Rajah of rhinestones" and as the "Sultan of sequins," Mackie has also created a number of exclusive designs for some high-priced Barbie dolls. His imaginative and sparkling designs have earned him a number of awards, including seven Emmy Awards. He has also been nominated three times for an Academy Award for his work in fashion and design.

Vintage Dolls - Must-Have Reference Books For Collectors

Ask anyone who collects vintage dolls, and they will no doubt be able to show you entire bookshelves full of reference books. Books are important to doll collectors for two reasons. First, the books usually contain important information about the doll companies; and second, the best doll books are resplendent with dozens of color photographs to help you identify your dolls.

Not all doll reference books are created equally, however. Photo and printing quality varies between books -- especially vintage doll books, which (despite their age) can be excellent resources. Generally, the books that you will find most helpful will be those that provide plenty of pictures and information about identifying characteristics.

Below are some doll book titles that every vintage doll collector should own.

Small Dolls of the 40s and 50s, by Carol Stover

This wonderfully detailed book is a must-have for anyone who collects small dolls. The book has chapters on each of the popular toddler dolls and small fashion dolls: Vogue Ginny, Cosmopolitan Ginger, Nancy Ann Muffie, Madame Alexander Alexander-Kins, and more. The book also includes information for identifying unmarked dolls and clothing.

Collector's Encyclopedia of Vogue Dolls, by Judith Izen and Carol Stover

Ginny dolls are wildly popular with collectors. This entire book is devoted to describing and photographing the various outfits and changes in the dolls over the years, from the 1940s all of the way to the modern-day Ginny doll.

The World of Alexander-Kins, by Patricia Smith

Madame Alexander's eight-inch toddler doll, known as Wendy or Alexander-Kins, easily rivaled Ginny in its variety of outfits. Patricia Smith's book offers hundreds of pictures of the different dolls available over the years, as well as a discussion of the changes that took place in the construction of the dolls.

Madame Alexander Collector's Dolls, by Patricia Smith

Although this early doll reference book contains mostly black-and-white photographs, it still offers one of the most comprehensive pictorial references of Madame Alexander dolls. The book is organized by year, documenting the way the dolls and outfits changed year-to-year. Although the book is currently out of print, it can be found by searching sites that sell used books, such as eBay, Half -dot- com, and Amazon -dot- com.

Madame Alexander Collector's Dolls: Second Series, by Patricia Smith

Like the previously mentioned book, Patricia Smith's Second Series contains mostly black-and-white photographs. However, the additional pictures and information make this book a valuable companion to the first book. This reference book is organized alphabetically, making it easier to find pictures of the doll you are looking for. Like its predecessor, however, this particular book is out of print, making it hard to find.

Madame Alexander 2007 Collector's Dolls Price Guide, by Linda Crowsey

Crowsey's doll values guide is a must-have for any serious Madame Alexander collector. The book is released each year with updated values. The book is also illustrated with photographs of Madame Alexander dolls; although there are fewer pictures than the other reference books listed here, they are exchanged for new photographs in each edition, making it worthwhile to buy a new copy every year.

American Character Dolls, By Judith Izen

Reference books are plentiful for more well known dolls, but it can be difficult to find information on lesser-known companies. That's why this book on American Character is so special. The book offers a chapter on each of the company's different dolls, complete with many detailed color photos.

Revlon Dolls and Their Look-Alikes, by Kathy Barna

Believe it or not, Barbie was nothing terribly original. There were a host of fashion dolls available for as long as ten years before Barbie's debut, and these "pre-Barbie fashion dolls" are especially sought-after by collectors. Barna's reference book provides some of the best photographs I've seen of pre-Barbie fashion dolls. The book focuses primarily on Miss Revlon and Little Miss Revlon, but also includes several chapters on competitors' dolls of the era.

Barbie Marketing

You may be wondering what Barbie Marketing is... I don't blame you - the first time I heard the term, my 12 year old son was spouting it at the top of his lungs in the Mall. It didn't take me long to realize he was talking about all the girls walking around in Barbie Costumes. You know the kind, high heels, jewelry and bling bling, hair that took two hours to perfect, and clothing that came from a designer rack, with too much makeup on the face of a girl too young to be that much into 'fashion'. Don't they play with dolls anymore?

Barbie Marketing is a hunk magnet for girls looking for guys.

At least, according to the 12 year old know-it-all who lives at my house. Little did I know, he knew this because his big brother had told him how much he liked the Babes in the Barbie Pink Costumes. But I was learning. For the fashion conscious wanna be chick magnet, Barbie Pink Costumes were a major attraction.

Barbie Marketing is Fashionably Pink with Black and White Accents.

When I asked about the specifics, I was given well defined details including the simple fact that Barbie Marketing is Fashionably Pink (with Black and White Accents of course). "It usually includes anything that would go well with diamonds and Bling Bling," according to my 12 year old know-it-all.

Barbie Marketing is Bling Bling with Style.

Everyday girls don't do bling bling well. They usually dress too simply, without enough accessories, and their shoes look comfortable. Ahem, and they know this how? "My girlfriend wears just enough bling bling to have a lot of class, but too much bling bling is just really gosh," the 12 year old genius again?

"You have a girlfriend?" I stand amazed at the premise.

"Well, I'm going steady," he admits casually with a shrug of his shoulders, "but we're not dating or anything until her dad ungrounds her."

"Dating?" my simple mind just lost total control, I'm losing it fast. "What constitutes dating?"

"When we eat at the lunch table, or sit together in youth group, Mom. You know, dating?" his eyes are rolling around in his head like marbles in the school yard, and he thinks I know?

"Well, dear, let me know two weeks before you and Ms Barbie Marketing get married and I'll find a wedding gift for you." I smile at him, ruffle his hair and we leave the mall.

"Mom, you're so out of touch!" There go those eyes again...
