Parrot Talking - Choose a Bird For the Bird, Not the Talking

No matter how long you train birds, it is always interesting to hear those first garbled words that come from a young parrot talking. You can never know what to expect, or how much of the mimicking will be sounds that resemble real words.

Have you ever met someone socially who you have seen in pictures on many occasions before, and yet had never actually spoken with face to face? You may have an opinion at the time of how the person's voice might sound. When the first words come out, you are astonished at the tone or accent that you hear.

Birds are similar to humans because there is no way to know how they will reproduce what they hear. Yes, there are some indications of what you might expect based on similar birds of the same size and species. However, it is not assured that tonal quality will be the same even between two birds that hatched together from the same parents.

You may have heard that the African Grey is the smartest of all parrots and that they always talk. This isn't the case, because a parrot talking or not talking is a decision that the bird will sometimes make on his own.

The size of the parrot has some bearing on the sound quality because the large parrots normally have the richer more natural sounds. Even this is not always true because there are small birds that can emulate sounds comparable to the larger parrots.

Buying a parrot just to hear a parrot talking is not a wise or humane action. The parrot is a living thing that can become a great friend to you when it is given the proper training and attention. It is not a talking Barbie doll and it has feelings.

Invest in a trainer for your bird if you decide to get one. A professional knows how to handle the animal and stands a better chance of getting the parrot to talk than you do if you have no previous experience. If you use the help of a trainer, you still must stay involved with the bird to be sure it becomes attached to you and not the trainer.

Establishing and maintaining a proper atmosphere is necessary if you want your pet to be at ease around you and others in your family. If an animal is unhappy in its home, it will not be comfortable enough to develop parrot talking skills for you. Abused birds rarely learn to talk.

Birds are intelligent creatures given to connecting with only a few people. It is cruel to procure one only to give it away or sell it to someone else. Parrots mate for a lifetime in the wild, and they have the tendency to "marry" their owner when they are domesticated. Whether a bird talks or not, the owner should be committed to the relationship.
