The Origin of the Barbie and Ken Dolls

There are many children who have a favorite type of toy. This can be teddy bears, Cabbage Patch dolls, Care Bears, soft dogs and cats. They can even be the world famous Barbie and Ken dolls. These two dolls are well known by many people and not just children. While these two dolls are mainly used as toys by little girls, collectors will not hesitate to buy either of these should they come across one.

The Barbie and Ken dolls are made so that they resemble adults. The many different careers and styles of the years have an impact on the lives of these dolls. Today you will find that the world of Barbie has many accessories and items that can be used with either of these two dolls. There are also companion dolls that are of different ethnic backgrounds.

The original Barbie doll was based on a German doll called Bild Lilli. Once Mattel made Barbie and acquired the rights to the German doll, Lilli was soon discontinued. Barbie was then officially given the name Barbara Millicent Roberts. Ken was named Ken Carson. The names for the Barbie and Ken dolls were taken from the names of Ruth Handler, who was the original designer of Barbie.

While Barbie made her debut into the toy market during 1959 at the International Toy Fair in New York, Ken made his appearance during 1961. From 1961 Barbie and Ken have been considered as a couple. Their relationship was a on and off relationship. After a 43 year relationship, the Mattel Company decided that it was time for the two dolls relationship to end.

This separation lasted for about 2 years. In 2006 Barbie and Ken were made into a couple again. While the reason for the separation of the famous couple is probably due to a decline in sales, the reason they are a couple is that probably Barbie doesn't sound complete without Ken.

While the popularity of both Barbie and Ken is attributed to the clothes and accessories you can buy, the look of the dolls may also play an important role. For many young girls Barbies looks are in keeping with the careers that she keeps getting. This fashion conscious doll has gone from being merely a fashion doll to a pilot, doctor, airline stewardess, astronaut, rock star to even being a fairy tale princess or mermaid.

Now while Barbie and Ken are just toys they are iconic figures. The looks and careers you see these dolls appearing in are an indication of how toy fashions can change. The one constant perhaps is the imagination and the endless hours of fun that a girl can derive from just playing with her Barbie and Ken dolls.

I made this for my little sister. We've watched other sim-versions of this song, so I thought I'd make my own version. This one took me 17 hours to finish (Windows Movie Maker is RETARDED!!!!!). An extra 5 hours were tagged onto the original 12 hours because movie maker refused to save it as a finished movie. So I split it into two parts (because I guess I used too many clips), saved the two parts, and then combined them. A HUGE special thanks goes out to my parents who spent a lot of time trying to figure out why it wouldn't save. (My dad had to miss a lot of his war movie he wanted to watch...I felt bad!) The dollhouse used in the video, which I modeled after the smaller version found in the kids' section in buy mode (called the Will Lloyd Wright Dollhouse) was available for download at www.thesims2.com but it was removed like most other lots are. It included Ken's snazzy, yellow sports car, Barbie's exclusive plastic box, AND all the dolls used in the movie! (Barbie, Teresa, Midge, Ken, Blaine, and Steven.) Top Ten Toy List For 2007

I finally got a good connection of the internet at my house so now I can write weekly. Tis the season to start thinking about gifts. Gifts for friends, family, associates , you name it.
I am going to give you my own list of the toys I just KNOW are going to be hot this holiday season. Most people would use the word "prediction". I wont use that word because predictions can be wrong. I believe 100% in what I am saying and in what I know, so here is my list of " Toys that will be HOT during the 2007 Holiday Season".

" Toys that will be HOT during the 2007 Holiday Season":

1. The Fisher-Price Digital Arts and Crafts Studio- this thing is amazing. I HAVE TO GET ONE FOR XMAS!!! Who is going to get one for me?Hopefully my dear, lovely, doctor sister will because I love her with all of my heart. This studio is amazing!! It allows you to draw, color, everything- it hooks up to your computer and you can save your art. Do you guys remember the guy on PBS who had the afro- he painted "Happy Trees" - he would start with a blank slate and end up with a canvas that was absolutely amazing. Sometimes , while painting, he would dip his brush in some paint, and you'd be like," Hey man, what are you doing, now you KNOW that color isn't right!". But somehow, at the end of the show, everything would blend and his canvas would be amazing- he always drew landscapes. So having the Arts and Crafts Studio is like having your own PBS show.You can print and save everything you've created. Mark my world AMERICA- this WILL Be the best selling toy this season. Its only $44.

2. The Fisher Price Light Sketcher - This is so COOL!!! Maybe somebody working for Fisher Price will send me one of these. This is like the Magna Doodle, but only better. It allows you to draw with light. So when you are in a car, and its dark, and you're bored, you can take out your Light Sketcher and draw-I love it!!! This is $29.99 at Target.You can draw in 3 different patterns - line, dotted line, or dashes. This is going to be a top seller.

So Fisher Price will definitely have at least 2 of the top 5 toys this season. Wow, Fisher Price is on a roll. They always are. F-P and the Sesame Street gang- I wonder what type of Elmo will be invented this season??

Now the rest are just dashed because I think they are interesting but I have not ranked them yet and I don't know if they deserve to be ranked.

- GI JOE Collection box- For all of us between the ages of 20-35, we all remember GI JOE. G.I Joe, American Hero. Hasbro has created a GI JOE Anniversary Collectors box that commemorates the 25th anniversary of GI JOE. The "gift box" is nice and simple. I like it. BUt if I got one , I wouldn't play with it. I would keep it nice and closed so it would be worth money at the 50th anniversary celebration. So if anyone buys one of these, I think they will have to buy 2: one they can play with and one they would reserve. This might make Hasbro some money. But not as much money as F-P's going to be making with that Art Studio.

- Nerf: Nerf has come up with a NERF Disk Shot that has 6 darts and 6 foam discs that can be shot through the air. The concept is neat but I don't know how safe it is. What happens if I shoot my sister in the face with it. Is the foam soft enough that it wont hurt anyone? Thats my only concern. But Nerf has really come out with some great products this season.

- Transformers- Transformers are a brand, not a company. Walking into the toy store, you would think it was the opposite.There are WAY too many Transformer toys. With the release of the Transformers on DVD, it will spark an interest in their toys. Lots of money has been spent on the trasnformer Toys. The Optimus Prime Voice Changer is cool. You know whats even cooler? The Transformers Projector System which allows you to project a stencil drawing on a sheet of paper, and then you can stand at your big piece of paper and draw whats being projected. This is really neat. You see how arts and crafts are really big this season? Kids like to do things with their hands and use their imagination. The F-P arts and Crafts studio uses the imagination more than this Transformers Projector System, but yet this Projector system is neat.

- Rose Art: Rose Art needs to be bought by Hasbro. They are always doing great things. I don't know how many times I need to say this. If Hasbro doesn't buy them, Mattel will. Mattel makes their money from acquisitions. This is what Hasbro needs to start doing. Rose Art creates a lot of "do it yourself" toys. I have their cotton candy machine, which works quite well. Rose Art now has a "Hover & Spin Paint Machine". This is so cool. You stick your paper on the machine. The paper spins and you drop paint on the spinning paper, different colored paint, which eventually creates a painted masterpiece. State fairs usually have this spinning art thing. Now you can have one in your own home, and its only $14.99. This is going to be a hot toy once people see it. Rose art toys don't get good displays in toy stores. I should rank this- this is my 4th top pick.
Rose Art also has a deluxe pottery wheel and a on the Go Art cup which is ideal for little kids.

-- SpinMaster - another company that needs to be acquired. Spin Master is really making their mark, coming up with innovative technologies. The Spin Master Tech Deck and skateboards are quite nifty. So is the Girl Crush Air Brush Tattoo system, which allows you to airbrush a fake tattoo onto your skin or your friends skin. No longer do you have to rub fake tatoos on.

The following toys are interesting to look at and may interest you:

The Spider Man and friends toy collection. The toys have soft upper bodies, which make them ideal for little kids.

Action Command Spider Man- doesn't really do anything but the packaging is quite extraordinary.

Playskool's Spider Man Sing Along - Now when I think of Spider Man , I think of a big tough guy. Who in the world created a sing along spider man?? HUH?? Thats like creating a sing along BatMan or a sing along Transformer?? Im surprised this toy made it through quality control at Hasbro. However, this toy is intended for kids 5 and below, in my opinion. At that age, kids dont know that Spider Man is supposed to be tough. So in actuality, this toy may work. All the kid wants to do is sing, so I think this toy may sell well, but the age group that likes this toy will be very specific- I say 5 and below.No 9 year old kid is going to want this toy. This Spider Man even has a soft soothing voice. When is Hasbro going to make a Glo-Worm that talks and can say goodnight in English and Spanish??

If I had a baby, I would buy the kid a Fisher Price learning DJ. The Dj has moving eyes and rocks to the beat of ABCS and 123. This toy is HOT!!! IF you know any kids below the age of 7, you really need to get them the F-P Learning DJ. Its interactive as well. Ill rank this as #5, especially for kids below the age of 7.

I like the Wish with Me little Cinderella & Little Ariel. It doesnt do anything. I just like the sounds it makes and the way the crown lights up. I really like the way the crown lights up. The Barbie Glamour Pup toy is okay too, if you're into Barbie. Im not.

Barbie is for Mattel what Transformers may be for Hasbro this season.

The Hannah Montana CD Board game may do well too. DIsney knows how to make their money.

Toys that are just dangerous: The F-P Jeff Gordon Shake N Go. What happens if the car shoots into someone's face??

Summary: Buy the Arts and Crafts Studio for your young ones. And the light sketcher . Fisher-Price (which is owned my Mattel) will be the biggest money maker this season unless other toy companies come out with something between now and Xmas.Rose Art and Spinmaster will also do quite well. Transformers will give Hasbro a little boost and the GI JOe commemorative box needs better marketing so that people my age know about it. Put a commercial on MTV,VH1, and ESPN and then people will know about it. Do a commercial during "Dancing with the Stars" and have an ad at the baseball field where the baseball playoffs are occurring. Try placing them in the men's section instead of in the toy section.

Avoid Magnet Toys

Magnet Toys are fun for kids of all ages, but are one of the most dangerous swallowing hazards out there. Swallow one magnet and they will likely pass right through so to speak. Swallow two magnets and they can attach from different sections in the intestines and cause major life threatening problems. You do NOT want to be the Aunt that caused little Jimmy to need major stomach surgery.

Avoid Pop Culture Characters

This may seem less obvious to many, but unless you know that a child already loves a kids pop culture icon, do not buy them Dora, Diego, Spiderman, Barbie, Pokemon, or similar items as a birthday gift. They can spark a pop culture frenzy that some parents may prefer to avoid. It's akin to smoking cigarettes, far easier to never start than it is to stop once you are addicted. Mommy and Daddy may never be able to get through the supermarket again without tantrums for whatever Dora branded junk food is on the shelves.

Avoid Noisy Electronics That Can Not Be Powered OFF

Last year our twins were given a pair of electronic drum sticks for a birthday present. The first problem was that there was one pair of sticks given to two boys who happen to share the same birthday through no fault of their own, but that's covered in another article. They had lots of different buttons that played different drum noises when someone whacked the sticks on something. They also had the astounding quality of not having any method to power them off. They were on 100% of the time and could only be disabled by removing two screws to get at the batteries. The also had the added bonus of going off whenever a car drove by or a plane went overhead or someone sneezed near them. The friends who gifted them to us are now forever known as the "Annoying Drum Stick Givers". You do not want to be those people. If you buy any electronic devices that make noise, make sure they have an off switch and volume control.

Avoid Small Parts

Kids love to play with tiny toys sized for tiny fingers. We know many 6 year old girls that LOVE Polly Pockets, and many 5 year old boys that love Lego Sets (And vice versa). But their 1 year old sibling is going to eat them and we all know nothing good can come of it. The same rules apply to a 4 year old, but for different reasons. They may not eat the toys, but they are not old enough to understand picking up after themselves yet. You'll doom their parents to endless cleanup time. Leave the choice up to the parents if they want to clean up 50 tiny parts after the kids go to bed and get them something larger.

Avoid Obvious Danger

Avoid Pogo Sticks, avoid Baseball bats, avoid Roller Skates, avoid BB Guns, avoid Alien Slime and Silly Putty (which ruins hair and carpets), avoid Rubber Band Shooters, etc. Most of these come from experience, trust us. You don't want to be remembered as the Aunt who broke Bobby's arm, shot Billy's eye out, or ruined Katie's long curly hair on Christmas morning.

Avoid the High End of an Age Range

Stay with the capabilities and interests of the child's age. Don't give a baby toy to an toddler, or a toddler toy to a six year old. For example, the Wooden Chomp and Clack Alligator Push Toy is the single most perfect gift for any 1 year old. The age range says 1 to 4, but it's likely less than exciting to a 4 year old.

In the end, a small amount of forethought into choosing a kids gift can make all the difference in the world. Do not just grab the first thing you see on the toy store shelf and you will ensure a happy child and parent on that special occasion.

Are Barbie Dolls Still Collectible?

Since bursting onto the toy market in a black and white swimsuit on March 9 1959, Barbie has certainly made her mark and is undoubtedly queen amongst dolls even after more than forty years of life.

Doctors Can Predict the Onset of Eating Disorders - Anxiety and Eating Disorders

Doctors states that schizophrenia and depression are not the mental disorders that have the highest mortality rate; rather, they point out that among people who have this disorder, 20% of them yield to the illness. Therefore, it is helpful if there are ways to predict the risk factors of having eating disorders and who will likely develop it.

According to the statistics, almost 90% of those who have bulimia, anorexia, or both, are young women in their 20's and teens. When they reach adolescence, their eating disorders have fully developed. Colleges in America reported that more than 40% of students have any of the three disorders in their florid or sub clinical form.

Around 2 to 3% of adolescents are bulimic while .05 to 1% of adolescents are anorexic. Moreover, 13% of high school girls are purging. Statistics suggested that eating disorders doubled since 1960's and younger age groups are the common victims.

Childhood anxiety, according to a team of researchers, is identified as a major vulnerability factor to predict the onset of these disorders. Two thirds of people with bulimia, anorexia or both experienced a form of clinical anxiety-like obsessive-compulsive disorder or social phobia-at some point in their lives. Years before their illness, 42% of them developed anxiety when they were children.

Doctors and medical specialists alike established a strong bond between anxiety and eating disorders in a way that both share a genetic pathway besides sharing many of the same personality traits. Dr. Walter Kaye reported this after observing and studying 672 individuals. He announced that in order to help young women to recover from devastating diseases, doctors must develop strategies to cure the eating disorder and anxiety. It may also be helpful to treat the anxiety illness at its onset to provide preventive effects on eating illnesses.

The obsessive-compulsive behavior of those with bad eating conditions was also particularly striking. OCD usually afflicts 3% of children. Because the onset of OCD is in the 20's, doctors identify this condition to be another factor to predict eating disorders.

There are all kinds of collectors in the world with different reasons for collecting.  Two very popular collectibles that often get lumped together are dolls and Teddy bears. 

Perhaps their popularity as collectibles is due to the fact that they both have roots deep in childhood or maybe it is because they both have very impressive potential to increase in value.  Regardless, they are both collected and cared for by people who treasure them deeply.  Not all of the dolls and bears that are sold today will be worth much in the future.  Many will not have much inherent collectible value to begin with and others will quickly lose their value as they are played with and damaged by normal wear and tear.

Teddy bears are another childhood favorite that some people do not recognize their collectible value until they take a closer look.  Older bears from companies like Bing and Steiff  were some of the first Teddy bears ever produced back before 1910.  They can easily bring hundreds of dollars when put up for sale.

Whatever your reason is for collecting, for money or just for fun, you can learn a lot about the hobby and enjoy yourself while you are doing it.  If you are lucky or decide to work at it, you might even make yourself some money.
